How to Teach Your Dog to Sit
Whenever you think of a dog trick, the “sit” command is one of the first to come to mind. Many dog owners teach this trick to their dogs first because of its popularity. Today, we are going to discuss how to teach your dog to sit.
First of all, you have to understand the process behind teaching a trick to your pup. It has more to do with attitude and careful repetition than with words. Remember that when you get a dog it is like you just started a new pack, so having a pack leader or an alpha’s attitude is extremely important.
If you want to learn how to teach your dog to sit, follow these simple steps:
1.Pick the right place
If you want to know how to teach your dog to sit, you have to train him or her in the right environment. As before-mentioned, dogs’ attention span is short, so if you try to train them where distractions are everywhere, you are going to have a hard time. Choose a place where you are able to control the environment as much as you can. For example: a closed apartment or your backyard. Picking this places wisely are going to help you greatly during the training process.
2. It is all about energy
Dogs are very sensitive to our emotions, and they respond well whenever they feel in sync with your energy. If you are angry at them because they are not listening, they will not do it because you shout at them, instead, they are going to be scared and less willing to cooperate. The energy you emanate is extremely important when it comes to communicate an idea to your dog. Just have a positive attitude, be understanding, and patient.
3. Let your dog figure it out
When teaching a trick it is good to let your dog thin for a while. Place a treat in your hand and close it, move your hand close to the pup so he can smell the treat. He will begin to try to take it out of your hand, but you should only give it to him once he sits without you telling him. Do this a couple of times, and he will associate the reward with sitting.
4. Give your dog a hand
Help your dog understand the movement you want him to make. It is as easy as to push the lower back of your dog down, and make him sit as you repeat the command. Do it several times when you feel like your dog is not fully understanding.
5. It is not what we say, it is how we condition our dogs to understand
When we try to teach something to our dog we get frustrated because they seem to not understand what we are saying. Truth is, they do not. The way you should train your dog is through conditioning and repetition.
By doing this, our dog will associate certain sounds with a specific command, hence the word “sit.” It is a short word that has a unique pronunciation, making it easier for your dog to understand. This is why the conditioning part is extremely necessary. Moreover, you should show your dog who the alpha is in order to make your dog more attentive, which leads us to the next point.
6. Understand your dog’s attention span
Puppies are easily distracted, they want to play with something else if you bore them, and it can be very hard to get them to pay attention to us. But, we can use their need to want more to our advantage. To do this, you have to train your dog in short amounts of time, leaving the pup wanting for more. So, make sure you have something that leaves your dog with the need for more treats, pets, among other things that may entertain your puppy. Also, make sure you take it slow, and give your dog short breaks.
7. Be encouraging
This subtitle speaks for itself. If your dog manages to do as you say then reward him or her. There are many ways to encourage your pet. You can give them a treat, you can go out and play, you can talk in that high-pitched puppy voice and rub his or her belly. By doing so, your dog will be conditioned to the idea that if he obeys he will get something in return.
