It is that time of the year, people! Grab your shorts and your ice cream cones because summer is here. But now, instead of complaining about the cold weather, we are complaining about the humidity, and how sweaty we are. Nevertheless, it is a great time to spend time with your dog outside. However, dogs have the same problems with heat as we have, so the best thing to know is how to keep your dog cool in the heat.
How to Keep Your Dog Cool in the Heat
Some people are oblivious to the fact that animals have feelings. People think that just because dogs are furry the will not get cold, and when it is too hot outside, people do not think about pup’s sensitive paws. If you have a dog, you have to make sure your dog is feeling alright all the time, especially when the temperature peaks.
Water, water, water
Dogs need tons of water during the hot days or else they might suffer from dehydration. Whenever you go out, make sure you have cool water available, especially if you are going on a long walk to enjoy the weather, your dog will thank you.
Use the back of your hand
How to keep your dog cool in the summer? Easy, learn this rule of thumb. Place the back of your hand on the pavement, if it burns then you do not want to walk your dog. If you could not handle it, your dog will not handle it either. Walking your dog on hot pavement could seriously injure your pup.
It might be extremely hot, but your dog still needs a walk, to play, and to potty. Schedule your walks either early in the morning or later on the evening when the temperature has dropped a little. Do not walk your dog after a meal or during midday, he or she is going to have a horrible time.
Do not be cheap
Come on, I know you are sweating like crazy, and I know that you wish you could get home to a cool apartment. Well, you can. Buy a portable AC for you and your pup, both of you will feel good after that long, humid walk. If you can not afford one of those, get yourself a fan, they are cheap and they help to circulate the air inside you home. Your dog can also sit in front of it if he or she needs to cool down.
Organize a trip to a beach, a lake, or a pool. It is the perfect excuse to sunbathe, and to dive into cool water (something that most dogs enjoy doing during the summer). Keep in mind that you need a place with shadow where your dog can rest. Also, if your dog is scared of the water, train him to love it, it will help to balance his or her body temperature, and it is also a great exercise.
Never leave your dog inside a car, or somewhere where the temperature is more likely to go up.
